Mathematics and Statistics student alumni
Where Our Graduates Go
Our PhD graduates teach and do research around the world. Since 2006 they have joined the faculty at Swarthmore College, West Virginia University, Brigham Young University, San Diego State University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Vermont, the University at Buffalo, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Toronto Mississauga, and at universities in Brazil, Honduras, India, Japan, Peru, and South Korea. Postdoctoral positions have taken them to the Courant Institute at NYU, Johns Hopkins, Duke, ICERM at Brown University, ETH Zurich, and the Australian National University.
Our PhD graduates also work in national laboratories, government, and industry. They have worked at Sandia, Los Alamos, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the US Geological Survey, and as statisticians and scientists at Eli Lilly, Amgen, AbbVie, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, and Boeing. A 2024 PhD graduate won Sandia's von Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship. A department survey of our 66 PhD graduates from 2006 to 2016 located 64 of them, and 63 of those worked in mathematics or statistics.
Many of our master's graduates go straight to work. They have worked at Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the National Security Agency, and the US Census Bureau; as data scientists and software engineers at Google, Apple, and Visa; in finance at Freddie Mac, Fidelity Investments, and Lloyds Banking Group; and in health research at the UNM Health Sciences Center. Others teach at Central New Mexico Community College, UNM Valencia, and Albuquerque high schools. Still others go on to PhD programs at UNM, Yale, Cornell, Rice, UT Austin, and ETH Zurich, and one became a Ritt Assistant Professor at Columbia University.
Graduates by Year
The list below covers graduate alumni of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Each entry gives the graduate's name, degree, advisor, and thesis or dissertation title when we have it. Titles link to the full text when the UNM Digital Repository holds a copy.
This list is a work in progress. It lists 654 graduate degrees earned from 1936 to 2026, grouped by year. It draws on the theses and dissertations in the repository and on the department's records of its PhD alumni and of its master's graduates since fall 2006. The repository holds no theses from 1980 to 2006, so most master's graduates from 1980 to 2005 are missing, and none of these sources is complete. Are you one of our alumni? Please send corrections, a missing thesis, or news of your career to the Department Advisor.
