Event Description:

Title: Discrete and Algebraic Discrete Morse Theory II

Abstract: In the 1990's Robin Forman developed discrete Morse theory as an analogy to the standard Morse Theory that works on CW-complexes. In particular, we can reduce a CW-complex to a homotopically equivalent one consisting of just the cells that are the critical points of a discrete Morse function. In Algebraic Discrete Morse Theory, more recently developed by  Jollenbeck, Welker, and Skoldberg, we will see how this can be applied to reduce a complex of free modules while preserving its homology.
